Poker Strategy 101
Experienced online poker players are able to gauge the odds and probabilities of most situations. They are able to read their opponents and they know exactly when to play certain kind of cards. Obtaining all of these skills requires plenty of practice and a desire to constantly learn from your mistakes. It may seem like a daunting task, but starting with the basics of poker strategy 101 will give you the proper foundation to hone your poker skills in the future.
Less Is More in Online Poker
In a standard game of online Texas Hold'em, each player will receive two hole cards. This gives you 169 possible hole card combinations at the start of each game. At most casual online poker tables you can get away with playing low and mediocre hands. However, if you're serious about your poker game play, it's likely that you'll be folding over 75% of the time right from the start. Out of the 169 possible starting hand combinations, only high value pairs such as Jacks, Queens, Kings, Aces or a suited Ace-King should be played 100% of the time.
If players only played the top five starting hands and folded the rest of the time, online poker would be quite boring. Basic poker strategy 101 dictates that you will actually be able to make plays with the top 15 starting hands, which range all the way down to a pair of 9's and a suited Jack-Queen. However, only playing about 15% of your hands will make you miss out on opportunities where the majority of your opponents are also carrying weaker hands to begin with. It's necessary to find a good balance between folding, consistently playing good starting hands and occasionally trying mediocre hands.
Online Poker Records
Online poker can become time consuming quickly. Tracking statistics and records have often been thought of as a tool only a fanatic or experienced player should use. However, anyone can currently use these tools with ease thanks to poker tracking software and a standard spreadsheet. In order to improve your poker skills at a quicker rate you should seriously consider leaving an electronic paper trail of all your poker games. Keeping records may appear to be a skill that is too advanced for those interested in learning poker strategy 101, but it's one of the easiest ways to keep track of exactly how you're doing and how much money you are actually winning.
A simple spreadsheet can be used to track a variety of information including:
Date of poker session
Number of hours played
Table limit
Total buy in amount
Cash out amount
True profit or expense
Profit per hand played
The types of statistics you can keep track of are nearly endless. A simple spreadsheet will give you an idea of how you're doing at a certain stakes levels and how much net profit you're seeing per hour and per hand. Specialized poker tracking software can also be used to take your game to a whole new level by tracking very specific details right down to the exact hand you played during a game several months ago.
Perhaps the easiest way to get started is by using the basic in-game notation system that nearly every online poker site provides. Getting into the habit of taking notes on your opponent's playing style, their average bet size and their initial stack size will put you in the mindset for being aware of practically everything that occurs during an online poker game. Most importantly, keeping records and notes will help you learn poker strategy 101 much more quickly by identifying what areas you excel at and where you need to improve.

Huge Mistake in Low Limit Online Poker With a Smaller Flush

Huge Mistake in Low Limit Online Poker With a Smaller Flush
A key importance in poker is to choose the right starting hands. Your poker strategy starts with the preflop hand selection. A bad strategy can lead to huge losses. You definitely do not want to lose, so better think twice before you call or bet preflop. Of course position is important as always but even if you have good position it does not mean you have to play trash hands!
In the following example I am playing in a full ring game which is reduced to 6 players in the previous couple of hands. The game is $0.5/$1 no limit hold'em with all players having at least $80 stack. I have $105 in the hijack and got dealt 8cJc. This is definitely not a premium hand, however it is suited, have some straight potential and the table is extremely loose. If I hit, there is a good chance of winning a big pot. I make the call, the button calls, the small blind also and the big blind checks.
The flop is: AcJsKc. What a beautiful flop! Why do I say that when I only have bottom pair? True, but this flop gives me a huge potential because of the high cards. Someone might already have a straight, but someone with and ace can also can make big calls if I hit my flush. More than that, someone might have two pairs or a pair and straight draw; altogether these are all hard to fold for low limit players. Not even mentioning that a J or an 8 also helps, even if I do not hit my flush. The blinds check and I decide to play the hand fast and aggressive, so I bet the pot ($4). The button and the small blind both calls making the pot $16 and the big blind folds. Now this is interesting. Maybe they have a pair and the just want to see what I do on turn or they are also on a draw.
The turn card is the: 9c. Bingo! The small blind checks. Now I have many options. However I do not want to play my hand slow. One reason for this is all the hand possibilities I have mentioned above. The other is maybe someone also hit a smaller flush and if another club comes on the river then I have no idea where I stand with my Jc high flush and maybe I leave a lot of money on the table. I bet $9, the button calls and small blind folds. The pot is $34.
The river card is: 3h. This card has not changed anything that is for sure. But my opponent made a fast call on the turn. This means for me he also has a made hand and is ready for a big call on the river. If he had a draw he missed, and no matter how big I bit he will fold. However he cannot be too strong because he did not raise on turn. I think he is ready to make a big call on the end but he is uncertain if he is better or not that is why he did not raise on the turn. I make a $22 value bet which also looks like a big bet indicating that I might have nothing at all. My opponent calls, showing Tc3c and I win the $78 pot with a higher flush.
My opponent really surprised me. I was ready to see a flush, and thought he has a smaller than mine. Why was I so sure that I was ahead? I had a J high flush and the A and K were both on the board. This means only Q high flush is stronger than mine but with that hand my opponent would for sure raise a bit on the turn to build a pot, or not hesitate to make the call on the river.
The conclusion is clear: if you remember what I have written in the beginning. My opponent made actually good calls on the flop, turn and river. However he still lost a big pot. And why did all that happen? He lost a big pot only because of a horrible $1 call preflop with Tc3c. I do not say that in low limit online poker you have to play only AA or KK. Especially not if you are on the button. But T3 does not qualify for any positions for me. No matter in what stakes I play or who my opponent is. To learn poker you have to make good decisions preflop and it will make your life easier later in the hand.

Rush Poker Mobile Review For Android Phones

Rush Poker Mobile Review For Android Phones
Rush Poker Mobile Review For Android Phones
Full Tilt have released a mobile client of their exclusive Rush Poker game. Available for Android handsets running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above, the Rush Poker app runs on Flash so it's not likely to ever be released on the iPhone, but brings real money poker to Android users.
Rush Poker is ideally suited for playing on a mobile phone. The game plays just like a regular poker cash game, with one major difference. When a player is no longer in a hand, they are immediately moved to another table and dealt a new hand. This means no waiting around, no waiting for a playable hand, just sit down and get right in the action. There's even a "quick fold" button, so you don't have to wait for it to be your turn to act - if you're dealt rags just click and be "rushed off" to a new seat, and a new hand.
If you've played Rush Poker on the PC or Mac then you'll already know that this format is fun, fast and perfect for the mobile market. One of the biggest problems for poker on a mobile phone is connectivity. It's a slight annoyance when playing a game and another player disconnects, but when it happens repeatedly it really gets annoying. With Rush Poker you don't need to worry, if player does disconnect on your table, you'll only have to wait once, because in a few seconds you'll both be whisked off to separate tables.
The Android version of the game is almost exactly the same as the regular version. You get to play the same pool of tables as players on the PC or Mac, at a full range of stakes from $0.02/$0.05 fixed limit to $2/$4 no limit, in both Texas Hold'em and Omaha. The interface is almost exactly the same, except for the layout of the buttons and there are no checkboxes for pre-actions. Due to the small screen size the raise bar only appears after clicking the raise button, but you get used to that really quickly. Finally there is no option to write notes on players, but since that would be slow and cumbersome to use on a mobile handset it's a feature which most players probably wouldn't use anyway.
Since Rush Poker Mobile runs on Flash, only Android 2.2 handsets are currently supported. That includes HTC's Desire, Evo and Sapphire, the Motorola Droid and Milestone, and the Samsung Galaxy S among others. Several tablets including the Advent Vega, Samsung Galaxy Tab and all of the Archos range also run the software.
Overall the game plays extremely well on a mobile device. The interface is very usable once you get used to the touch screen controls. While it's not quite perfect, it does play very well and is the perfect way to fill some spare time on the train or during a coffee break. Let's hope this spurs some of the other poker sites to follow suit, and maybe release a poker client for a different OS so that iPhone or Windows Mobile users can see some of the action too!

Defending Against the Continuation Bet With Stephen Krex

Defending Against the Continuation Bet With Stephen Krex
Defending Against the Continuation Bet With Stephen Krex
The Continuation bet, or C-bet, is the strongest bluff commonly used in poker. I went into more detail in the previous post, but basically the c-bet is a continuation of pre-flop aggression. The pre-flop bettor takes advantage of the 70% chance that his opponent didn't hit the flop. This works often enough to be profitable and many players will do it 80% or even 100% of the time. Learning to recognize and defend against the c-bet is important yet difficult.
It would be an understatement to say that Stephen must have position to properly defend against the c-bet. Though it is important that you defend against c-bets, you will still need to fold to them most of the time. Too many defended c-bets will lead to exploitation by opponents the same way that too few will. My rule is 1 out of 5 times.
Stephen Krex says you must first put your opponent on a range before you try to defend against his continuation bet. It's always possible that he hit the flop hard and is making a legitimate bet. So why should you defend against the c-bet? There are two reasons: one, to prevent your opponent from stealing every pot from you. Secondly, you need to disguise your hands so that it isn't obvious when you do hit the flop. The 1 out of 5 rule will help with this.
To put your opponent on a range, you need to gather some information on him. Whether you take mental or paper notes or use a program, check out his stats. If he's a tight player, odds are that he's got a good hand. Likewise, if he's a loose player, it is more likely that he's just making a c-bet. In addition, note his position. A player who raises under the gun or in early position is more likely to have a good hand than one who raises on the button or in the cutoff position.
So if you have determined that your opponent is making a continuation bet and you want to defend, you now have two options: call or raise. Just calling is a good idea against tight players, who are likely to check/fold to you on the turn. Call rarely, as a player who notices your line might fake weakness by checking on the turn and then proceed to re-raise you. Keep in mind what hand you're representing. Against these tight players consider calling on a flop with an ace or king, because your opponent will likely put on you a pair. If you call on a low board, though, your opponent will probably put you on a draw. This will make it hard to raise on the turn if the "draw" isn't completed and you will almost certainly be facing another barrel.
Raising is a good option on low boards that aren't likely to have hit your opponent, like 268, or flops that look like a draw. If you raise a tight opponent on such a board, he may put you on an over pair and fold.
Be careful and remember that defending too often is a mistake.

Strategies For Entering Large Scale Poker Tournaments

Strategies For Entering Large Scale Poker Tournaments
Strategies For Entering Large Scale Poker Tournaments
Entering large poker tournaments will require a much different approach than that employed in traditional table games or small tournament play. A good deal of early tournament play is about surviving those early stages and building your bankroll into the later stages so you can be in a position to effectively compete against the large players. The objective of entering a large tournament is to either cash in - survive until the cash round, or to make it to a cutoff for gaining entry into an even larger tournament such as a satellite. This guide will guide you through the various stages of the game in order to help you to navigate the tables at large scale tournaments.
Determine the strategies of your opponents by carefully observing how they utilize their stacks. Some players take an aggressive go big or go home approach. At the same some other competitors sit back, taking a more passive stance, waiting for the big hand. Rotation of players at the table is the order of the day for tournament play, so it is important to pay careful attention to new player behavior so you can properly adjust your approach for each phase of the game.
Early Tournament
Most modern tournaments take a freeze out format, which means there are no re-buys so a losing player is eliminated from the tournament. As a result, most players begin the game waiting for a big hand to maximize their chances of doubling up. This is a good strategy to start with but you can also benefit by taking advantage of the timidity of other players to become selectively aggressive.
For example, you enter a hand with J-10 suited. The flop comes K-Q-3 where you hit only three of your suit with an open ended straight draw. While you may feel your opponent is holding a king, re-raising aggressively may signal to that opponent you have a set (three of a kind) or two pair. By moving all in, you force your opponent to risk their entire stack on the gamble, and in many cases they will fold as a result. At this stage the blinds and antes are relatively low so you can carefully pick the spots to be aggressive, exploiting your chances of making the right move.
Middle Game Play
As tournaments become more competitive in the latter rounds, it's important to update your personal strategy accordingly. Since the blinds and antes increase in the game, time becomes an even more important factor, requiring you to play more hands. While you may have to be more open when it comes to playing hands pre-flop you should remain keen on tight aggressive play post-flop based upon the cards as well as your read on fellow players.
Try to avoid going up against players with a large stack who are able to put you all in based on a bluff. This situation forces you into making difficult decisions. Wait instead for an opportunity to double up against a weaker player, or go for several smaller pots to build up your stack. Following careful strategies will assist you as you navigate into the later stages of the tournament in a strong position.

The Basics of HORSE Poker

08:44 0
The Basics of HORSE Poker
HORSE poker is one game made up of several, including bouts of Texas Holdem, Omaha Eight, Razz (low card), Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud Eight. Limit betting is the rule in HORSE but some tournaments do away with this to rev up the play as the end of the tournament nears. HORSE is a predominant game at the World Series of Poker and can be found in games with high stakes in order to challenge the knowledge and talent of players in multiple games. HORSE is probably the foremost game for the expert players as it demands a thorough understanding of multiple games and their rules and betting strategies.
For those players unaccustomed to playing combination games, a concerted effort to educate oneself about the rules of methods of play is mandatory before placing that first bet. It's true the game is a limit one but it is not difficult to stumble upon extravagant pots and bets on Horse tables particularly since game play can rapidly accelerate. Limits in Horse generally start at $2/4 and then the sky's the limit. The limit stays across all rounds. Multiple limits can usually be found in casinos as they cater to the player new to the game right on up to the professional high roller.
The Workings of HORSE
If you are only familiar with one of the games that make up HORSE, play the lower limit tables. The type of game changes with each turn of the dealer button and up to ten hands of each poker variation are played before going on to the next one. Because you will be playing so many poker types, you need to fully comprehend each of the variants. The same basic premise of each game is present in HORSE poker, but your strategy should be adjusted to bet high on your strongest poker type and low on your weakest. HORSE is found at table games and tournament play. These are the combinations that exist in HORSE:
*Texas Holdem
Way the most popular form of poker and always the highlight of the World Series of Poker. The objective of Holdem, a round type of game, is to put together the highest five card hand from five community cards and two hole cards. None of the hands or one or both can be called upon to structure the highest hand at showdown.
*Omaha Eight
Four cards are dealt in this variant and the majority of players will need at least two of their cards and any three out of five community cards to construct the highest hand. The showdown pots are split between the highest and lowest hand with the low hand having cards ranked between aces and eights.
*Razz Poker
An odd form of poker in that the lowest hand gets the pot. This is similar to the low part of Omaha but there are no hand limits on the low hand. The one with the lowest high card or pair usually comes out ahead, but a superior bluffer has also been known to rule in Razz as well.
*Seven Card Stud
A very commonly played poker type where players are dealt cards in progression, some face up, some face down. The highest five card hand takes the cake.
*Seven Card Stud Eight (Hi-Lo)
This one follows the same direction as Omaha Eight with its split pot for the lowest hand below eight.
